![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Monday, October 02, 2006 Today I woke up at like 6 AM- thinking that it was another day with the E-Team...then I realized that it wasn't and I could sleep some more (homeschooling gives me that advantage) so I did. I slept until lke 8 AM. Then I got out my journal and spent the next 3 hours writing down the whole weekend from start to finish - and leaving out a great deal - Note: I am really not a slow writer either! Then my grandparents came over at like 1 PM, since they go to the dentist up here, but they really live 2 hours south of here. I love them! They have been such a great influence on my life! After that, I slept for like an hour...and here I am. I am going to have to do alot of school in a small amount of time today OR just do double tomorrow. For those of you who weren't at the E-Team outreaches, or for those of you who were, and just want to read my slightly abridged version of it - here it is: THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 28, 2006 At 3 pm I was auditioning at the Wellsboro HS with a song from the PBS Civil War series (you can tell what my dad and brother like from that sentence) called "The Ashokan Farewell" . I added some extra things to it than what is actually in the music and played it for our conductor...and I am pleased to announce that I have made 1st violin this year (not that that means much in a community orchestra)! I arrived at the Cornfields' around 5:30 pm I think...where mom dropped me and my 2 1/2 tons of baggage off (3/4 of which I didn't even use), and took Ben to the Efthimious' to hang out with the other 2 Stooges (yeah, he's the 3rd Stooge). To make a long story a bit shorter, I hung out at the Cornfields' and then the Jerors' until like 11:30 pm when we got 2 simultaneous phone calls saying that people from the E-Team were coming 'round the bend to Gang Mills. We all hopped into cars and sped (under the speed limit, of course...) to the Snapps' house and waited in anticipation. Then - lights! Cars! Action! They arrived. I chose to stay indoors rather than rushing the cars, because with Dell and Rachael and Alex and EVERYBODY out there (actually, Dell wasn't out there now that I think of it - she was sitting right behind me at Cassie's desk), it's not like I could get a word in edgewiase anyway (lol) so, there I waited. After initial "hello's" (of which, mine were probably the most awkward) and a little hanging around, we had to leave because sleep was needed to make us able to function the next day. Bethie, Abbie, Dawn (?) and Christine (or something with a "C") came with us. We all slept soundly that night. FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 29, 2006 Dell, Bethie and I woke up around 5:45 am, got dresses etc and "Shwa" picked us up and headed over to the Snapp residence for prayer. That was a really great time. We prayed for the hearts of the lost to be prepared, we prayed for our own hearts to be prepared and many other things...I guess we didn't pray hard enough about the weather...lol! Then we went back to the Cornfields' house and ate breakfast (I had Honey Nut Cheerios if anyone cares) and really got ready before heading over to Centerway. We had worship and prayer time. I had only worn a tee-shit and a thin, long-sleeved shirt underneath and I was FREEZING! Biblical Masculinity points: Shwa (Joshua - for those of you who don't know the nickname) gave me his WARM trench coat, which I shared with Anna after Demory pointed out that she was freezing too! Thanks Shwa!!! Then it was off the the ABSOLUTELY FREE, NO KIDDING, NO DONATIONS ACCEPTED Car washes! Ours was at the Peaches and Cream place (closed of course - last time they gave us free ice-cream)! I am sure we got the greatest group of people EVER!!! lol Well, we got the Efthimious (a few, anyway), Shoreys, Cornfields, Polczynskis (Ben and I), Jarred, Jordan, Shwa, Meiklejons (Spelling that wrong again I'm sure) and, well, EVERYBODY who's ANYBODY (lol - just kidding - haha)! The sun broke through the clouds a few times and we washed (and dried) close to a million cars (lol)! It was fun. Then, Shwa, Dell and I were commissioned to walk around on Market St. for about an hour and hand out free drinks and snacks to people. I actually saw a bunch of people come to the community fair from that! After THAT we drove (again with Shwa - our Chouffeur - yeah, I'm sure that's spelled wrong too) to a church building where we had pizza, shared stories of the day and learned about effectively sharing the gospel. Good thing I brought $5 with me! :) Then I hung out at the Cornfields' with a bunch of the kids (Anna, Mattea, Drew, Jordan, Ben, Daniel etc) and played Freeze tag after figuring out that we could not catch a football in the dark…I did this until a little before 9 pm when I snuck over to the Jerors’ for their “17 and older” gathering! I went with Nicole to get some water and cookie supplies, and after we got back just hung out. It was just Me, Nicole, Derrick, Jarred, Corey, PJ, Cassie, Shwa, Alex and Jess. Drew was there though he isn’t yet 17…and Dell crashed a little later. After that, I went back to the Cornfields’ and got a shower (not wanting to wait in a line in the morning) and finally got into the top bunk of Dell’s bed by using the backlight of my watch to guide my (uncertain) steps…especially when I thought a wall was a door… SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 30, 2006 Saturday started out not quite as cold feeling as other days…so I had hopes. Alex and I predicted that the sun would break through the clouds and there would be blue sky and no rain…because almost all of the nicest days start out with some fog! *cough* Could we have been more wrong? Yes…I suppose so – It could have hailed. I was face-painting almost the entire time, so I had to sometimes touch poor, freezing faces with my own, icy-cold fingers! God was good, though, and a BUNCH of people STILL came out – despite the weather! After that, we went back to the Cornfields’ and Abbie and Bethie curled up in their beds. Dell flopped down on her bed and promptly went to sleep. My muscles were sore from shaking all day from cold, so I decided I’d lay on my bed for a few minutes. I told myself I would not even shut my eyes…but – lo and behold! My eyes shut. And I was awakened 1 ½ hours later for a dinner of spaghetti (my favorite food)! Dinner was a silent affair that night. None of us wanted to move even to get cookies for dessert (Neekie served us the cookies – thanks Neekie!!!) let alone talk. Dell and I were still thawing out – wrapped in our blankets. Then, we got a call from Mr. Efthimiou, telling us that it would e OK for us to come over and play capture-the-flag until 10:30 pm. You should have seen us move then!!! I piled on 6 layers, 2 pairs of pants, a hat, a coat (which I didn’t really use – with 6 other layers on) and 2 pairs of socks – one pair of which was my PINK SOCKS from YOUTH CAMP!!! I didn’t even know why I packed them – except that Jarred was coming, but I figured that it would probably be nice weather and I would have no need to wear them…but they sure became handy!!! Shwa and Alex came to pick us up and we sped to the Efthimious’ house, singing along with the music. Once at the Efthimious’ we just hung around for like 45 minutes. I watched Corey blow up plastic water bottles with foil and toilet cleaner (at least, that’s all it looked like), I watched Adam and ? (forgotten name) play Ping-Pong for a while with Rachael, and I watched (more listened) to Jarred, Shwa and ? (unknown name – never introduced) play drums, congas (I think it was congas) and guitar. At last we gathered in the driveway for team division. After not being able to decide who would be on who’s team, Alex made it simple by suggesting that we split up by Birthdays (Jan-June and July-December). That made pretty fair teams, so we began (Daniel deserted our team, but we got Adam instead)! I was supposed to be defense (which I don’t like as much as offence – I must admit), but Adam grabbed me for a Komocozi mission to the other team’s side – he knew around where their flag was. We got past Dell and into the graveyard/cemetery. That was almost actually a good plan – since we could duck behind trees and gravestones at leisure…however, it was a fenced in cemetery. There was no way we could see to get out, and someone spotted us. Adam said, “Our only chance is to run.” I started to run, but seeing the speed at which the opposing team member (probably Corey) was approaching, I began running back up into the cemetery and hid behind a tree. I don’t think whoever it was knew if there was just Adam or more than one person back there, so I figured that MAYBE I could find a way to get out of the cemetery and sneak around to find the flag and/or free the prisoners. However, all I found was that the only way out was to climb the fence and, seeing how weak it was, I figured I would never be able to make it without destroying a section of fence AND getting spotted. Thus, I figured that my only chance was to get as close the edge of the cemetery as I could and then make a dash for it when I felt no one was close enough to catch me…this plan MIGHT have worked if Corey had not heard me clumsily snap a twig while trying to hide behind a gravestone. “Don’t pretend not to be there – I can see you!” is what I heard. I was not as close to the end of the fenced in area as I had wanted to be, but after waiting a few seconds, holding my breath, I dashed out. Again, I MIGHT have made it to our side, had I known the Efthimious’ property better, but I was dashing down a slight slope with what looked like a ditch at the bottom (since I was going to try running back up on the road -–the way we came down…it seemed most practical) and I slowed down nearly to the point of stopping when I neared the road, because I did not know how deep the ditch might be…and I only had made about 3 strides on the driveway when I felt a hand on my shoulder. I sighed, stopped, and was led away to “jail” for what seemed like an eternity. At last Jared C. made a bargain with us that, if we would say where our flag was, he would let 2 of us out of jail. We did rock, paper, scissors to determine who the 2 people would be. Bethie and I were those 2 people. We heroically ran back to our 2 ungrateful team members (Alex and Jarred) who were remaining (lol). After enjoying a few minutes of freedom, I ran around the horse’s pen and hid behind the Efthimious’ van for like 15 minutes, because I thought I kept hearing things up in the woods, and I didn’t want to go over to the other side if I would be needed to help round up somebody. Then I decided to sneak around the tool-shed place. I found a wheelbarrow around the other side, which I crawled under right before I saw a shadowy figure down by the picnic tables, where I thought our prisoners were. I waited there for a minute or two and, not seeing anyone again, I dashed down to the picnic table to free our imprisoned team members – only to find everyone walking into the house! I met a confused Corey on the way back from retrieving my shed coat who was also wondering what was going on – he had apparently been right next to our flag! It was 10:30 pm… and we were going home. So, I guess no one really won that game. *sigh* It was fun anyway, I suppose. I wish we would have spent a little less time in “jail”!! That night I slept not quite as well as before, but well enough until I woke up! SUNDAY, OCTOBER 1, 2006 Guest Sunday. I was on projector duty with Anna (and Jenn, technically). It was great seeing so many people – though half were E-Teamers! Mr. Snapp gave a great message on the gospel in great terms. After church was out BBQ/Picnic – more free food! Yum! Some kids tried to get together a game of Ultimate Frisbee before lunch, but that was quickly stopped in favor of eating. After that, I didn’t really feel like playing, so I just mostly watched Jarred and Adam vs. Mr. Cornfield and Jared playing whiffle-ball. It was quite interesting to see – I’m just glad I wasn’t playing – any tricks Dad taught me from when he played ball in school, I have forgotten now! I like playing sports, but I only know the rules to a very few. People think football is so grand…I still don’t get it. I actually prefer soccer, Basket Ball, Ultimate Frisbee (which should be made into a team Olympic sport) and stuff like that. I still don’t know all the rules for B-Ball and Soccer though…I still like to try (and I still like to watch, even if I don’t get half of what is going on)! After the picnic was the bitter-sweet farewell (more bitter than sweet…but I do know that I shall see at least some of the people again – hopefully sooner than later). Again my tongue-tied-ness came into play…when I would have loved to say a more hearty farewell, all I could manage was “It was nice having you!” “It was nice getting to talk to you!” and “Bye!”. Ah, well. God is definitely growing me in that area, though I can still talk to people better with less people around than more. I was blessed to have even been able to stay at the Cornfields’ for the weekend and participate in everything. Tai Sophia finished on 11:43 PM.
