About an hour ago, I was just on the internet, minding my own buisiness when my mom comes in yelling for me to get off the internet so she could use the phone. Of course I did, but my next question was "why?" My time had not even been 1/2 up...and the tone of mom's voice sounded desperate. So...I asked her the inevitable question, "why?" She frantically dialed the phone as she answered, "Your brother's started a forest fire!" ...and my mom, not being the calm, cool, and collected person I am (*cough*) was quite worked up about it. I looked outside and, seeing that it was indeed true, I said under my breath, "Good - It's about time we had some excitement around here!" (Interesting how two people can look at the same thing and see something totally different.) I ran to don a more appropriate set of clothing for rescuing our forest, which if you've been to our house, you would know why my mom was so worked up about our forest being on fire...we are SURROUNDED by forest! Thank God that the wind was blowing away from our house! ANYWAY... I ran to the basement and grabbed a shovel - I thought about grabbing a bunch of wet rags like I had seen doen in movies... but it seemed impractical at the time. I rushed outside and, after wetting the shovel for extra help, I began whacking the fire as hard as I could... trusting that my very limited knowledge of fighting forest fires would serve me - and a shovel would actually really help put out a fire! Well, a shovel does work... at least for a medium sized forest fire... but I wouldn't want to be a firefighter when a whole forest was on fire - trees and all... it was rather hot, even though we didn't have a full fledged forest fire! Oh, and we didn't lose any trees... I think mostly the 10 years' worth of dried leaves and twigs on the forest floor was what was catching so well. Dispite our best efforts, the fire was still going, and I just had called dad to ask where he had put the hoses, when a fire-truck pulled up. It only had 2 guys in it, and they took a look at the fire and must have called other guys, because soon there were like 5 more trucks and like 30 guys! What a party! lol It took a while, but pretty soon they had the fire under control, and finally out. Oh, dad had come home by then... he probably heard all of the sirens suddenly start after I called him in town, and decided he should make sure everything was ok! So...that is my exciting story of today - one of those things you only want to happen once in your life! Turns out that all of this started because a box that was on fire got blown by the wind out of our burn-barrel and landed near the woods - because Ben was burning trash. The ironic thing is that, just yesterday, I was talking with my Nana and Pop-pop about natural disasters etc happening to your house... and I thought, "Boy, I'm glad nothing like that has happened to us!"
